Introduction
to the poet:
At
just nineteen years old, Nigerian born poet Elizabeth Haruna has
got lots to say to the world. She does not want to keep her view
of life and the experiences of people, places and emotions and the
inspiration she draws from her African heritage to herself, but
wants to share it.
"Poetry
for me is a means of expressing the way I feel in a simple way which
can powerfully impact others."
The
start of the poems: Elizabeth realised that she had a passion
for poetry when she was about nine years old. It has remained with
her ever since.
After moving from London to Luton she began taking part in local
poetry competitions and performing her poetry in front of audiences.
The local success in her written poetry enabled her work to be published
in several anthologies.
My
ambition is to help people through my passion for poetry. |

Earlier
this year Elizabeths first poetry book came out. This small
collection of poems entitled Therapy, is a collection of poetry
dealing with the themes of dreams, aspirations and religion.
At
the moment:
Elizabeth is currently studying Politics in her first year at the
University of Leicester. Writing poetry as a profession is a poets
ideal but fully aware of the competition she has a more realistic
view. "I was thinking about sticking to my degree and writing
poetry part time", Elizabeth says.
"If
poetry was just a hobby for me, I'd probably seek work in publishing
or become an editor of a magazine. Either that, or a job which allows
creativity and expression - such as working in advertising.
"Politics is quite a dynamic subject. It looks at past events
and how these occurrences affect us today. It also looks at modern
issues and delves into the politics behind them. Such as the Middle
Eastern conflict between Israel and Palestine. I enjoy politics
because it informs me of what is happening around the world, now.
"Leicester
is inspiring because it's such a relaxing place. It's quite quiet
and friendly, I haven't really come across any un-nice people, except
maybe landlords when searching for a house to live in next year
with friends. Living in Leicester is conducive to writing - it's
quite a green and peaceful place."
Two
of Elizabeth's poems:
An
Open Road
The
road is open
Which way shall I go?
The sun's high in the sky,
My spirit's not low. My mind,
Heavy with dreams,
My luggage,
Light as a feather.
Inspiration and aspirations,
Whatever the weather.
Freeze
Freeze ....
The picture is frozen.
A
frozen scene in time.
Sun high in the sky,
Trees in full bloom
The sky is clear and dry.
The air crisp and cool,
The mood
is set to fool.
Freeze ...
This picture,
Is mine.
