LEICESTER
will be the only city in the country to host the Radio 1 musical extravaganza
One Big Sunday this year.
The event is going to be held on Sunday 20 July 2003. And 100,000-odd
punters are expected to flock to Leicester’s Victoria Park for the
third year running.

"Previous
events in Leicester have been nothing short of amazing with 100,000
people turning up to see some of the biggest acts around," said Radio
1 publicist Nicholas Caley.
"We've had Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Kylie, Faithless and Dido to name
just a few and this year looks set to have an equally impressive line
up."
Leicester City Council's Cllr Nigel Holden welcomed the return of
One Big Sunday for the third successive year. "The BBC is extremely
pleased with the way Leicester city council has managed this event
on previous occasions, paying tribute to the work of our staff and
the many thousands of fans who have enjoyed the shows," he said.
"It demonstrates our ability to host major events and underlines our
title of festival city." The city council has set up a new website
so that people can keep up to date with all the latest developments
and news. Visitors to www.leicester.gov.uk/onebigsunday
can enter their email details and receive email alerts with all the
latest updates.

The city
council’s festivals and events unit, which directly manages the event,
is now working with internal departments, emergency services, BBC
Radio 1 and other agencies.
Consultation is also taking place with people living in the Victoria
Park area, to ensure minimum disruption on the day.
"It is great news that Radio 1 has chosen Leicester to hold the only
One Big Sunday event this summer," said service director (cultural
services) Richard Watson.
"Over the last few years this event has attracted thousands of people
to Leicester, providing a significant boost for the local economy.
As this is the only event of its kind this summer, we will be working
with a number of partners, including Leicester Promotions, to ensure
visitors to the city have the best experience possible."
