Fed
up with struggling through the over-packaging towards your chocolate
morsel that masquerades as an Easter feast?
Then try a few of these egg, chick and rabbit-style presents to
celebrate the resurrection of Christ or just the oncoming Spring.
Remember,
these are just a selection of goodies. There are many others out
there, from many different suppliers. But we hope these provide
the inspiration for your happy shopping.
1. Don't put your head in the sand
Decorate
an Ostrich egg with food colours, felt pens or paints. Then invite
ALL your friends round for a massive scrambled egg breakfast on
Easter Sunday.
One egg feeds about 24 people. Get your ostrich egg from a farmer's
market, or look out for suppliers at
Leicestershire's
farmers' markets

Eastern delights that will last until the sun sets in the west
Get chocolates with a shell that you can keep forever. These gorgeous
hand-painted Easter eggs are produced by local artists and families
in Kashmir. The producers get them direct from the makers, then
fill them with organic champagne truffles that are Soil Association
Approved, gluten free, wheat free and, apparently, delicious. From
Currant Affairs on Loseby Lane, Leicester.

3. A
little Leicestershire luxury
Buy a carved Emu egg from a Kirkby Mallory emu farm. The naturally
dark green shells are hand-carved to reveal the blue and white layers
below. You can buy pre-carved or commission your own design. See
leicestershireemus.com for more details.

4.
A real Easter Bunny
If they hanker after the real thing and have
got the love, the hutch, the space to run around and the money for
the vet's bills, why not get a pet rabbit? We advise that before
you buy, you check that the recipient of your spring love token
actually wants to clean it out every day!
5.
Wild and wonderful
Just as the ospreys return to their protected
nest at Rutland Water bird sanctuary, register your bird or egg-mad
friend as a VIP for the Osprey Project. They will get to help out
as a volunteer with the project. More details from www.ospreys.org.uk

Mad as a bag of chickens
With
love from Britain's first Environment City. Show your green and
caring credentials by sending a flock of chickens to a village in
Africa.
The
gift helps with food and commerce for impoverished families. You
could send a goat or a cow instead, but that didn't seem quite so
Eastery. More details from Send
a Cow.
