Questionnaires
were distributed throughout Wymeswold inviting people to choose
their top 10. The idea came from the priest at St Marys Church,
Reverend Jeff Hopewell.
He says: "I
thought well, Classic FM does your top tunes, and the Church of
England is very good at jumping on the band wagon just when its
rolling to a halt, so I thought this time Ill get on one thats
still rolling, and well try and have your top favourite hymns.
"I think
people really enjoy singing, most people have been singing hymns
since childhood and there are one or two that are favourites,"
adds Reverend Hopewell.
Eighty-six people
filled in questionnaires, which were handed
out in places like the village pub and shops.
Olga Williams,
the organist at St Marys, had the task of preparing the choir for
the unveiling of the chosen 10 at a special Songs of Praise service.
The choir practised all the hymns on the shortlist of 50.
"We looked
at the list, and didnt want to sing Abide with me
and All people that on earth to dwell, those are hymns
that were sung in the 1920s and 1930s," says Olga.
However, the
choir were content in singing the hymns 'Dear Lord and Father of
Mankind' and 'The Lord's my
Shepherd,' which made it into joint first place.
