Leicester
Cathedral now houses a scheme to help new refugees or asylum seekers
at the first point of contact and help them with issues concerned
with claiming asylum in Leicester.
"The cathedral is at the heart of the city, which is the right
place for this to happen. It is absolutely right the church takes
the lead in expressing what the Christian churches believe about the
alien and the stranger in our midst," says Tim Stevens, Bishop
of Leicester.
Malcolm Elliott of the Quaker congregation in Leicester describes
why he got involves in the new project to help newcomers the city.
"We heard about the plight of asylum seekers and we thought we
had to do something to help. We heard there was a scheme set up a
welcome centre. It seemed an ideal opportunity to do something practical,"
adds Malcolm. The centre is open every Thursday at the Cathedral and
is open to give advice to people seeking asylum. |
