First the good
news - you get to eat lots of pancakes filled with tasty sweet and
savoury delicacies. Second the bad news - you have to give something
up for 40 days.
This week gives
everyone a chance to revisit their failed New Year's Resolutions
and have another crack at giving up the demon weed, chucking the
chocolate or banning the booze to live on locusts and honey for
a month.
Not everyone
will be taking it quite so seriously of course. The tradition dates
back to Jesus's period of solace in the wilderness where he avoided
every temptation and fasted for 40 days.
Since then,
Christians have followed in his stead by forsaking something themselves
for a month before Easter - a period known as Lent.
Shrove Tuesday
marks the tradition of clearing out the cupboards of goodies before
the fast begins. Hence - the traditional cooking of pancakes. We've
dug up some wierd and wonderful recipes for your delectation.
Leicestershire
and Rutland special
- fill your fresh pancake with slices of Melton Mowbray pork pie
topped with grated Stilton or Red Leicester to mark pancake day
in a most homely way.
Decadent
Pancake Stack - East Midlands weather presenter Lukwesa
Burak favours this sumptuous combination of cream, apples, syrup
and liquer. Oh go on, it's only once a year.
Traditional
- and oldie but goodie (and favourite of Radio Leicester's Lucy
Collins) has got to be fresh lemon juice and sugar. Follow the recipe
here and simple add lemon and sugar to taste.
Peking
Duck - as it's also Chinese New Year - why not combine both
festivals with a Chinese favourite using pancakes and duck - traditionally
hung in the sun for 12 hours (you may have to improvise).
Let
us know what your favourite filling is.
