Mormon links to Winter Olympics

Arthur and Denise Hardy from Loughborough will have an extra special eye on the Opening Ceremony in Salt Lake City.

Arthur and Denise Hardy will have an extra special eye on the Opening Ceremony in Salt Lake City.

This weekend sees the opening of the 19th Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In Leicestershire however, members of the Mormon Church will be watching American members performing at the opening ceremony.

Salt Lake City will be under the spotlight of the world for the duration of the Olympics and the 17 days will gather huge attention throughout the world.

In Leicestershire, Mormons will be watching the Opening Ceremony with added interest as they will be watching members from America singing at the opening.

Arthur and Denise Hardy from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Loughborough say they have special interest in the Games as the Mormon Church is situated there.

"First of all - our understanding of the Trinity is somewhat different. We believe that there are three separate and distinct beings."

They spoke to BBC Radio Leicester's Sandra Herbert about the history of the Mormon Church and how it came to be based in Salt Lake City.

"A mass migration took place from the East to the West arriving in Salt Lake in 1847. I think it was mainly because we were somewhat different. It was new, we had some doctrines that were perhaps not mainstream Christian.

"First of all - our understanding of the Trinity is somewhat different. We believe that there are three separate and distinct beings. That would clash with mainstream Christianity.

"We have a certain health code called The Word Of Wisdom. So that tends to set us apart from the mainstream and some people find that difficult when they relate to us," says Arthur.

The Mormon Church in Leicestershire has members from across the county. To listen to the full interview in full and on demand which covers the history and beliefs of the Mormon Church - click here.
