The visit is
part of a two-year project under the European Commission's Asia
Urbs scheme, with Lyon as the lead partner. Leicester is receiving
106,000 euro for its participation.
The European Commission is placing increasing importance on building
closer links between European and Asian cities through local government
partnerships.
The Asia Urbs programme which offers a new framework for decentralised
co-operation ñ is seen as a starting point for a sustainable
initiative bringing European and Asian cities together to work on
common grounds based on urban pilot projects.
The four key objectives of the programme
are:
- promoting
long-term co-operation
- improving
the quality of life for citizens of the participating cities
- helping the
exchange of experience and knowledge promoting the socio-economic
- development
of Asian cities
Leicester's
participation involves leading on the development of a waste management
strategy and establishing mechanisms for community participation
in waste management.
The delegation will be in Leicester from Tuesday to Friday. It will
visit the city's community recycling centre, the materials recovery
facility at Planet Works, planning conservation and enhancement,
landfill and composting sites, as well as visiting the city's Area
Traffic Management centre and touring regeneration sites.
"The Asia Urbs project contributes to the city's overall regeneration
strategy and will enhance the city's reputation at the European
level.
"It will help to establish strong partnerships for future funding
opportunities for the city, requiring joint working with European
partners," says Councillor Ramnik Kavia.
