Britain's first bird-feeding carousel has been opened for
business at Boothwood Primary School in Loughborough by Bill
Oddie.

Mr Oddie joined Colin Green, Severn Trent Water's environmental adviser,
to explain to children how they can help feed and care for birds during
the winter.
The unique
feeder is Colin Green's brainchild. He explains, "The carousel
is a great fun way of teaching children about the importance of feeding
birds during the winter months. Birds don't just eat bread. They love
peanuts, seeds, apples and fat - and there's room for all their favourites
on the carousel. It even goes round when the wind blows."
The
hexagonal carousel stands six fee tall and four feet wide, and has
six hanging compartments for food. A tray mounted underneath will
hold water for drinking and bathing, and catch any waste dropped.
Colin says, "We mustn't forget that clean water is just as important
as food for birds in the winter, and not just for drinking. They need
to keep their feathers clean and in good condition during the winter
so they can fluff themselves up to keep warm."
Kay Hughes from Boothwood Primary School says, "We are always
looking for ways to encourage more birds and wildlife into the school
grounds, so the children have an opportunity to learn about their
environment at first hand. This is a great way of doing just that."
