previous week's diary

Friday 12 April
Fred at nursery and Stanley obligingly sleeps in his pram while I dig a little bit more. Lovely sunshine. Birds singing. Great outdoors feeling.

Saturday 13 April
The boys babysit while the girls dig the allotment
Carpets appearing from everywhere. They are left neatly rolled up next to what remains of our shed - a pallet with a cupboard on it full of pots and seeds, and a watering can and a bucket. A sort of island of hope in the sea of grass. Liz dug for five hours on her own and got a few precious feet further down the allotment. She says she loves it down there.

Sunday 14 April
I went down with Dave, Fred and Stanley. I dug. Dave amused the children. Got an hour's digging and clearing in. Fred dug the earth on the enormous heap at the far end. I can see this is not going to be a pastime that can amuse the children all the time. I think my visits will mostly be in the evenings after they have gone to sleep. Looking forward to the long summer nights.

Monday 15 April
I have stopped doing Aquarobics on a Monday night (after five years of it) so I can dig with Liz. Dave and Simon babysit and play Playstation. It works very well for us all. We dug and chatted from 18.30 'til sundown at 20.30.

Wednesday 17 April
We hear that we can have the whole allotment. Hurrah. I phone Liz at her work so she can be excited too.

Thursday 18 April
Drizzle. Mild. Dug and cleared from 19.00 ish until sundown at 20.30. Then we lit the old gas camping lamp and dug some more. Bit tricky getting the hang of lighting the lamp - there were a few large flames first of all. Great for gardening at night though. We marked out a little bed across the whole width of the allotment and planted tree mallows and perennial climbing wallflowers in them - staking our claim, I suppose.

Friday 19 April
Stephanie says we can have back Jenny's greenhouse that I took down and gave her two years ago. She had not managed to put it up yet.

Saturday 20 April
Liz planted strawberries in the cleared patch. Simon is making us a cold-frame.

Sunday 21 April
Liz was digging and clearing for ages. Dave had taken Fred to work with him for the day so I took Stanley down to the allotment so L and I could get excited about the greenhouse and plan more of what we want to do. I couldn't bear doing nothing, so afterwards I went to town and bought seeds - French beans, cucumbers, Ailsa Craig tomatoes, and Early Onwards peas. I considered liberating some currant bushes, but will wait until November for that.

Monday 22 April
Dug and cleared 'til dark at 20.45. Then lit the gaslight and planted broccoli sprouts from Ron, seed potatoes from Terry, and two rows of peas. We eventually want to do a four plot rotation scheme, but at the moment we are just planting things for the fun of it as soon as we have cleared enough room. It's really exciting.
