This
allotment's vital statistics:
One sixth of an acre at Rowley Fields Allotment Site on Meredith
Road (close to the busy Narborough Road).
 |
| The
view... |
The
sights and sounds from the plot:
A wonderful view of the Soar Valley. You can see Oadby church on
a clear day. It's within earshot of both the Leicester City and
Leicester Tigers' grounds. Great Central Way, which is popular with
dog walkers, cyclists, and joggers runs along the bottom edge of
the allotment site.
What we hope to do there:
We will begin by clearing the site ready for planting. Then we'll
get things into the ground and, eventually we hope to bring you
recipe ideas and even tasting sessions. We hope to offer you home-grown
veg, rather than vacuum-packed supermarket produce.

| The
shed - a haven in waiting? |
We
can grow a wide variety of fruit, veg and flowers in Leicester.
Whether we cultivate our plot with pesticides and fertilisers, or
follow a more organic path is a point to be discussed as the time
draws near for planting.
Restore the run-down shed to its former glory - it needs a new roof
- and make it into a haven for tired presenters at the end of a
hard day.
Wildlife
on our allotment:
All sorts of wild animals can be found at allotmetns. Birds of prey
are a regular site; there's rumoured to be a fox living under our
shed; you can see rabbits and mice at any time of the day, and grass
snakes have been seen around too.

Beau has trouble getting through the growth |
People
on our plot:
These days there's no such thing as a typical allotment-holder.
There's a real mixture of age, sex, race and experience to be found
in any allotment society. Our merry band is me, Monica Winfield,
my partner Chris Gibbins and our ten year-old, Gordon Setter cross
dog, Beau.
Courses
on allotments and gardening:
Environ, who offered us this plot, run courses throughout the year
to help people get started, decide what to grow and learn how to get
the most from the soil.
Introductory sessions are being held on 2 February, 8 February and
23 February. More details from Environ's
Allotments for All Officer, Paul Howgill. |
