An old
suitcase was the inspiration for this band's moniker. But
not just any old suitcase - the one belonging to jazz supremo
Dizzy Gillespie.
Band member
Niam Cortazzi said the band decided to switch from their original
name of The Beautiful Losers because it was "self-derogatory".
They were
flicking through a book of photos of jazz greats when they
found a picture of the great trumpet player pictured with
a suitcase (valise in French).
The band
was drawn together almost by accident. Niam used to sound
engineer at former city venue The Factory.
When
a band was booked featuring the current apple of his eye,
Niam cobbled together a support band featuring himself and
some of the best musicians poached from bands he'd seen playing
at The Factory in previous months.
Niam didn't
get his girl. He said: "She turned up with her boyfriend
so that was the end of that". But the first of incarnation
of Dizzy Valise was born.
Naim describes
their music as "dramatic and inovative pop songs that
pull on the heart strings - a bit Queen, but without the camp".
The band
are currently working with Dubstar producer Steve Hillier
who is re-mixing a couple of their tracks.
