Terry Wogan

BBC commentator Terry Wogan isn't happy

Is Eurovision still a Song Contest?

Iain Hamblin from Leicester went to the Serbian capital of Belgrade to watch the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. He says he agrees with the BBC commentator Terry Wogan's comments that it's become too political.

There have been calls for the UK to abandon the Eurovision Song Contest because some say, it's anything but a song contest!

Accusations of tactical voting followed in the wake of Britain's entry, after it came a pitiful last in the contest.

The BBC's Eurovision commentator, Terry Wogan, has hinted he might not commentate on the contest next year, and music expert Carrie Grants believes Eurovision should revert to the original system of panel voting.

Listen: Interview with Iain Hamblin

BBC Leicester's Tony Wadsworth spoke to Iain Hamblin from Leicester who was in Belgrade for the contest...

Iain says that he, like Terry Wogan, was very unhappy with the result of Eurovision 2008.

He believes the Russian entry didn't deserve to win:

"Nobody liked the winning song. The only reason he won is because he is so well-known in other countries...

John Barrowman

Iain's choice for the next Eurovision commentator

"And he had the gold medallist ice skater from Russia doing a routine next to him. It became a floor show , it's not a song contest anymore.

"If that's what it takes to win, then I'm suggesting that the UK next year enters Robbie Williams with David Beckham next to him doing three minutes of keepie-uppies!"

But who should commentate on next year's Eurovision if Wogan does step down?

"We were having a good discussion over there on who we would like to see take over from Terry Wogan.

"John Barrowman came out tops in Belgrade amongst the British...we think he'd be quite good."
