The proposed Harborough Cinema

A future sight?

Girls On Film

Two Leicestershire schoolgirls have set out on a mission to bring the latest blockbuster films to their town. Listen to their plans for a new cinema in Market Harborough and find out how you can help make the dream a reality! Interviews here...

Two schoolgirls in Market Harborough have started a campaign for the old Kwik Save building near the town centre to be turned into a cinema.

Eleven-year-olds Lucy Seaward and Mollie Drewry say that there aren't enough facilities for young people in the area, and this would give them something to do.

The Petitioners

BBC Radio Leicester's Katharine Sutton went to meet Lucy and Mollie at their school to find out more...

Lucy said, "I think that it's a great opportunity for a lot of young people especially, to go to the cinema after school."

The girls' petition is now in over 40 shops around the town and there's an online version too. They've already got around 3,500 signatures, but they're aiming for 5,000 by 11 October 2007 when a meeting is being held with officials from Harborough District Council!

The Support

They're being helped in their campaign by Alastair Campbell from the Ideal Marketing Company.

Katharine Sutton met him at the cinema's proposed site to hear his views on the idea. Plus listen to the opinions of the town's residents...

The old Ritz cinema

The original cinema

Alastair pointed out that the old shop was originally built as a cinema in 1939, and operated as a cinema until the late 1970s, and it still stands in an accessible position within the town:

"The great thing about being in the centre of the town is for a lot of people, mainly for teenagers, they don't need to get a car there at all."

The Potential Buyer

One person who's interested in buying the site is KC Suri. His business, Reel Cinema, renovated the Curzon in Loughborough, which has been very successful.

He joined BBC Leicester's Ben Jackson on the Breakfast Show to discuss the plans...

KC believes that small town cinemas are of great importance to local life:

"It is more or less the hub of the community. It is a venue for family entertainment."

He commented that Market Harborough seems like an ideal location for a new cinema and is interested in the girls' chosen site.

The Landowners

The company that owns the land that the girls are interested in have said that they are willing to sell the land without profit, as long as their costs can be covered.

The old Kwik Save building

As it stands today...

Alislane Limited sent BBC Leicester a statement outlining their position that concluded:

"...the ball is firmly in their court, and if they can come up with an offer that allows us to sell the building without making a loss, then we will gladly do so."

This is good news for the girls, and the town of course, as originally Alislane was saying they weren't prepared to sell as they didn't think the town could support a cinema.

Keep listening to Ben Jackson from 06:00-9:00 on BBC Leicester 104.9FM & DAB to get the latest updates on the girls' progress!
