We are officially the best! (Well at least when it comes to hot and spicy dishes.) | "The other cities just have to accept that some you win, some you vindaloos!" | |
Leicester have been announced winners of the seventh Curry Capital of Britain, and we at BBC Leicester couldn't be more pleased! The competition entry is motivated by a combination of restaurant and council input, after initial nominations from the people of Britain. Any style of curry can be entered for the award - Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Caribbean, Korean, African and any other you can come up with! This year the competition was intense with four of the initial 16 cities nominated achieving an impressive 80 points out of the possible 100; Leicester, Glasgow, Bradford and Manchester. Ek Maya of Dysart Way in Belgrave was Leicester's team leader restaurant and achieved a special mention from the judges. King of Curry!

Bradford were confident after their 2004 win, but it was Glasgow that were seen as our main competitors after holding the title three times previously. Organiser Peter Grove said, "The standard of restaurant in every city was so high this year that the judges had to look for that something extra to make the difference". In the end it was Leicester's particular spice for life that stood out against the main rivals, impressing judges with an innovative DVD that indicated big plans for the city's future. It's no surprise to Leicester's residents that the city should have won, after tasting many of the delightful dishes on offer - and there really is a huge selection. According to MSN search engine research, Leicester has more curry houses for its size then anywhere else in Britain. A status that is easy to understand if you consider that there are more than 30 curry houses just within the city boundary! For this year at least, Leicester is King of Curries, so the other cities just have to accept that some you win, some you vindaloos! |
