The Ruby Pendant

The winner of BBC Radio Leicester's Valentine's Day competition for the Ruby Rainbow pendant talks us through her most special moment... what could be more romantic than eloping to Gretna Green?

As part of the Ruby Rainbows Appeal, BBC Radio Leicester offered listeners a chance to win a special Valentine's Day gift.

"I wonder how I plucked up the courage to run away... but I'm glad we did!"
Jane Wagstaffe

To enter the competition listeners were asked to send us their most romantic moment, along with their donation for the appeal.

The winner of the beautiful BBC Radio Leicester Ruby Rainbow pendant was Jane Wagstaffe of Measham.

Jane told BBC Leicester about the day she  and husband Graham eloped to Gretna Green.

Included with the entry was a  40 year old newspaper clipping entitled "Father nearly stopped the runaway wedding", which charts the time from when the couple first met at a Burton bus stop to their secret marriage in Scotland.

Jane's winning entry…

My special moment was when the registrar said to Graham "You may kiss the bride."

Forty years after eloping to Gretna Green, we are celebrating our Ruby wedding anniversary this year.

Looking back, I wonder how I plucked up the courage to run away (I was 17 and Graham was 24) but I'm glad we did!

We are hoping to go back to Gretna this year for a few days to celebrate and Graham is going to buy me a ring as we couldn't afford one in those days.
