Rob Deering Q&A

With his easy charm, cheesy singing voice, razor-sharp wit and clownish physicality Rob has quickly established himself as a firm favourite on the comedy circuit and has played at all the major comedy clubs nationwide. Now he's coming to Leicester...

Rob now hosts BBC Radio 2's 'Banter', and he gives musical comedy a good name.

Armed with only a guitar, Rob will be appearing at the Bottle Rocket Comedy Club on 03 December as part of a Christmas Special, with support from Matt Kirshen and Dan Nightingale.

Introduce yourself!

"Funniest childhood memory is when I was stripping to my underwear for Music And Movement and I absent-mindedly went one pair of pants too far."
Rob Deering

I am TV's Rob Deering, famed for my huge cheery face, comprehensive knowledge of the useless, and of course my legendary guitar.

You may remember me from such shows as Radio 2's 'Out To Lunch' and 'TV's 50 Greatest Things.'

Was comedy a big part of your life growing up? What is your key childhood 'comedic' memory?

I suppose it was, in that I've always been like what I'm like - I didn't follow comedy, but I did make jokes up and pretend to fall over.

Funniest childhood memory is when I was stripping to my underwear for Music And Movement and I absent-mindedly went one pair of pants too far. Not funny at the time.

What did you find funny as a kid? Is it still the same?

You've Been Framed. Yes.

Who are your favourite comedians? Why? Do you remember the first time you heard/saw them?

Rob Deering

Lee Mack, Harry Hill, Sean Lock - constantly hilarious and constantly surprising live. I remember the first time I saw each of them because I laughed 'til it hurt.

Who do you see as your contemporaries? Is there a comedy 'scene' that you are a part of?

I don't really fit the scene, I'm more 'showbiz' in style than most of my contemporaries, but it's an incestuous little world so I know most of today's top comedians, and they're all lovely.

Best place to watch comedy?

Glee Clubs in Birmingham and Cardiff, The Stand clubs in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Krater at the Komedia in Brighton, Chuckle Cub and the Banana in London - depends where you live!

Long-established clubs with a loyal audience are the best, but any Comedy club full of people will do.

What can people expect from your gig?

Big laughs, gurning, rock. The occasional well-concealed socio-political comment. Poo jokes.

Catch Rob at the Bottle Rocket Comedy Club in Leicester on 03 December 2006.
