On Monday 28 November the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards were held at the Derby Assembly Rooms and these were the success stories regarding Leicestershire. Team of the Year Leicester Ladies Hockey Team. They won the League and Super Cup for the second successive year and won bronze in the European Cup Winners Cup. For Jennie Bimson it made up for the previous year "Feels Amazing! Last year I felt pretty robbed when the announcement came so this year I was really chuffed!" Sportswoman of the Year Loughborough University's Caitlin McClatchey celebrates her 21st birthday this week with the Sportswoman of the Year trophy. Caitlin won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the European Championships. Caitlin says " It's a great honour to receive this award because I was up against some really stiff opposition. "I've had a good year winning two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, although I was a little disappointed with just a bronze at the Europeans." Brian Clough Breakthrough Award Lisa Dobriskey from Loughborough received this award. The promising athlete announced her potential with a surprise gold medal in the 1500 metres at the Commonwealth Games. "I was really surprised", said Lisa. "It's fantastic although I was quite nervous when I went on stage with John Inverdale. The atmosphere at the Commonwealth Games really spurred me on" Lifetime Achievement Award.
Gordon Banks, the former Leicester City goalkeeper. He helped England win the World Cup in 1966. At Leicester he played in two FA cup finals and two League Cup finals. Banks said that since they won the World Cup 40 years ago not a days go by when he's not asked about it, "I think until we win it again this will be the case." |
