BBC Radio Leicester's Ben Jackson tragic story of the five month old baby girl who was mauled to death by a pair of Rottweilers. Listen to our interviews and features covering this shocking story...

25 September 2006

This morning was one of those mornings that we'll all remember for a very long time. We covered the tragic story of the five month old baby girl who was mauled to death by a pair of Rottweilers.

Listen to our interviews and features covering this shocking story...

The news had come in over the weekend that the little girl had been killed at the Rocket pub on the New Parks estate in Leicester, it's our job to tell the story, but also to be compassionate in the way we covered it both for the parents and grandparents but also for the people who lived nearby, all of whom were deeply upset and in shock.

Rupal's back

"Thankfully stories like this don't come along very often, but when they do I know that we cover them as carefully and compassionately as we can."
Ben Jackson, BBC Radio Leicester Breakfast Presenter

Rupal took the radio car out to the scene ready to report live throughout the show. She did an amazing job, particularly since she'd not been on the programme for more than three months and had only got back from holiday a few hours before!

Rupal has an amazing talent for getting people to talk to her. She's very gentle and understanding, but also very approachable, which I guess is why when all the national media people that were swarming around the estate failed to get anyone to speak, Rupal was talking to one of the families' neighbours.

It's one of the great strengths of Local Radio that we really do care about how we approach stories like this. It's easy to go into a community mob handed demanding this that and the other if you know you'll never be back there again.

It seems to me that it's far better to treat people with respect. If they don't want to talk, then that's fine. No problem. If they do, then it's so important to listen and take the time to listen.

Thankfully stories like this don't come along very often, but when they do I know that we do our very best to cover them as carefully and compassionately as we can.

Just read Leicester Mercury story about city council says Blaby can not hold farmers market in car park of George Hotel because of ancient market charter, but they can open one at the Walkers Stadium, how come?
