Polo the albino hedgehog
Polo, Leicestershire's albino hedgehog

The White Spikes

What's small, white and prickly? Leicestershire's very own albino hedgehog of course! Only one in ten thousand hedgehogs are born totally white with red eyes, and one has been found in Coalville. Read on to meet our new spiky celebrity…

Albino hedgehogs are very rare, and few make it to adulthood because their colour makes them more visible to predators.

That's why it was a bit of a surprise to find one walking around Coalville town centre!

We went to find out more about Leicestershire's spiky star...

The hedgehog was immediately taken to nearby vets for treatment, and was identified as an adult male.

He's been nicknamed Polo, due to his distinctive colour, and is now being cared for by a local animal rescue charity.

"Only one in ten thousand hedgehogs are born albino"

They have found a home for him in a walled garden, where predators can't get to him.

Unfortunately this is as wild as it will get for Polo, as his colour makes him too vulnerable to live outside of a protected environment.

But whilst there will be someone there to keep an eye on him, he will have the run of the garden – his very own prickly patch!
