A bishop has personally taken to Leicester city centre's streets to find out how the police deal with drunken revellers. The Bishop of Leicester, the Right Rev Tim Stevens, spent 12 May patrolling nightspots with officers. He also met members of the city's street pastors scheme, which involves clergy and ordinary Christian providing help and advice to clubbers. Listen to Bishop Stevens' own account of the night:
The evening included a tour of the police's security camera facilities.

Bishop Stevens, aged 59, also found out about Leicestershire Constabulary's safer routes initiative, which aims to help drinkers get home more safely. The dad-of-two said the excursion has given him a newfound respect for the police and street pastors. Bishop Stevens said: "I was pretty tired by the end of the night, which certainly made me appreciate how difficult it is to work during these hours. "What the police and pastors are doing in the city centre is absolutely vital to the well-being of the young people who spend their evenings there". |
