The Boy Least Likely To @ The Charlotte

The Band Mostly Likely To Interview

by Becca Bryers
Becca grabbed a quick chat with indie pop group The Boy Least Likely To which revealed prison, cuddly toys and James Blunt. Read on for more…

Jof Owen and Pete Hobbs (aka The Boy Least Likely To) performed a wonderfully warming set at Leicester's Charlotte with an company of five other musician with various instruments (more than I thought possible to fit on the less than massive stage).

"Oh yeah - there were even women fainting. We came out and a woman was just lying there…"

Previous to this I had grabbed ten minutes with the guys in the quietest spot we could find.

So - with Pete leaning next to the sink, Jof perched on the toilet seat (“You could at least wait until after the interview!” - Pete), and me balancing on the edge of the bath - we began!

Q: Is this the first interview you've done in a bathroom?

A: Jof - Actually it's not! Well we did one in a dressing room once, but I was sat in the bathroom area.

Q: You're old hat at this then! Anyway - how did the band start?

A: Jof - Well we sent the band up a few years ago - but we've known each other since we were kids. We put some 7" singles out and then eventually we got it together and released our album.

Pete - We started to get serious about the band then.

Q: So it was just a laugh before?

A: Pete - Well it wasn't just a laugh - it was more the only time we had spare.

Q: What were you doing the rest of the time?

A: Pete - I worked in a prison. I was just doing prisoners' personal accounts.

Q: So not too hands on…

A: Pete - Well they were in the prison!

Jof - I worked at a hose pipe company - much scarier that prison in some ways…

Q: I hear you’ve just come off an American tour… how was that?

A: Pete - Well we're still talking to each other!

Q: Did you get a different reaction?

A: Jof - Not really…

Pete - I think we went down better in fact. It’s just such a big place.

Jof - All our fans are pretty enthusiastic anyway.

Pete - They send us presents… like cuddly toys.

Jof - And they always give them to us with trembling hands - our fans seem to be quite shy!

Q: At least you haven't got aggressive stalkers! So do you think there's a link between toys and the cartoons you use?

A: Jof - We originally did it so we didn't have to appear of the cover of our 7" singles. Trouble is when we started to do that nobody thought we were real - they thought we were like six year olds.

Q: Who does the cartoons and how old are they?

A: Jof - My brother. He's 30 - but I told another interviewer he was 12! I think he quite likes it though.

Q: So you were on tour with James Blunt I hear - what did you think of him musically before the tour?

A: Jof - We hadn't really heard of him!

Pete - We don’t really listen to the radio much. You know in America he gets women screaming and crying...

Q: Really? I didn’t know he was that big there…

A: Pete - Oh yeah - there were even women fainting. We came out and a woman was just lying there…

Jof - It was just before we came out though!

Q: Leaving America for a minute… have you been to Leicester before?

A: Jof - No I don't think we actually have. We were talking to people in a bar earlier too and none of them had ever been!

Q: Did you get a chance to look round today?

A: Jof - No we never get to look round anywhere on tour really.

Pete - We were in Nottingham earlier - but only got to see the BBC there.

Jof - In America we were literally stopping at each venue.

Q: So finally, is there a question you would loved to have been asked in an interview and no one has ever asked you?

A: Jof - That one!

Pete - How about "Would you like some money?"

Q: Okay - would you like me to give you some money?

A: Both - Yes please

No chance!
