The local volunteers, Sarah, Jenny, Allison, Drew, and Sana, trained at The Amida Trust Buddhist House in Narborough for six weeks learning skills ranging from how to speak Hindi to how to teach English.

We caught up with them before they left to get their impressions of the training, their expectations and hopes, and to try and understand what the link was between Buddhism and teaching English.

Not all of the Volunteers are Buddhists. Some just wanted to find out a bit more about the Buddhist way of life.

Those who can... Teach!

There is a huge demand for teaching English, as the language itself acts like a rope that you can throw down to the lower castes and those less fortunate, helping them to climb up in the Indian society and get much better occupations.

The students managed to overcome the caste barriers and create friendships whilst working together in ways that they had never done before.

The youth were keen to get out there to help but were unsurprisingly also looking forward to experiencing the culture, seeing the Himalayas and of course tasting the food!
