Cairns catches the eye
Cairns in Australia

By globe trotter Hannah Spriggs
Hannah tries out white water rafting and spends her final few days of her Australia adventure with fellow backpackers...

Coming from England, we knew the beautiful weather couldn't last, so the gray sky on travelling to Mission Beach didn't come as too much of a shock!

Mission Beach is famous for being where the rainforest meets the beach – it did look really nice, but our main reason for going was the Grade 4 white water rafting on the Tully River.

Last big feed!

Wow, it was so good, the river was roaring and we had five hours in our dinghy riding the rapids... and yes, we did flip the boat over!

The next day we took our last Greyhound bus to Cairns, backpacker party capital. We have made a lot of friends on our journey up the East coast and a lot of us all got to Cairns at the same time for a big finale.

Cairns is fantastic for shopping and the nightlife. It also has a really nice lagoon which is just as well because the beach leaves much to be desired and there have been recent crocodile sightings!

The thing to do from Cairns is take a trip to Cape Tribulation, the furthest north you can go along the East Coast of Australia without a 4x4.

The trips can be quite expensive, but friends of ours owned a car so we decided to go on a road trip together. The drive up was lovely – lots of ocean views, and once in the Cape Tribulation National Park the rainforest was really thick.

The beach at Cape Tribulation is beautiful, the sand sparkles and the rainforest comes right onto the beach. All good things must come to an end though, so a few games of Frisbee later, and it was time to jump back in the car for the drive back to Cairns.

Enjoying the sun...

We were sad to leave Oz, and the friends we had made, but happy at all of the fun memories we now have from the last three months. Thirty-three hours after leaving Cairns and we were circling in the gloomy grey sky over Heathrow.

Home sweet home, the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next!
