Leicester were left to rue their sloppy finishing as they crashed out of the Heineken Cup with a hugely disappointing semi-final defeat by Toulouse at the Walkers Stadium. The Tigers controlled long spells of the first half but could not claim the try their superiority warranted with sloppy handling seeing Ollie Smith and Darren Morris squander glorious opportunities. The boot of Andy Goode supplied 14 of their points while Tom Varndell touched down late on, but when Toulouse finally stepped up a gear in the second half, Leicester were comprehensively outclassed. Scrum-half Jean-Baptiste Ellisalde finished with a 17-point haul - a total which inlcuded a try - while Finau Maka and Frederic Michalak also crossed as Toulouse booked a final appointment with Stade Francais on May 22. llisalde booted a penalty while in contrast Goode missed his second of the afternoon as the match appeared to creeping away from Leicester, who replaced Tuilagi and Ellis with Will Johnson and Scott Bemand respectively. Wales skipper Gareth Thomas came on for Poitrenaud at full-back but it was Michalak who crossed next after Healey's clearance failed to find touch and Toulouse worked the ball to the France fly-half who raced in at the corner. Ellisalde added the extras, effectively guaranteeing victory, but Leicester launched a late raid which was concluded when substitute Tom Varndell was driven over for a try which arrived far too late. |
