Martin Fry
You remember Martin Fry don't you?

Eighties revived by Hadley and Fry

By guest writer Derek Tait
Dust off your gold lame and get out your khol. Eighties greats Tony Hadley and Martin Fry are belting out their greatest hits at De Montfort Hall.

As far as concerts go Tony Hadley vs Martin Fry and ABC has a particularly intriguing name. It sounds like a one sided celebrity boxing match between the imposing ex-frontman of Spandau Ballet and the gold suited singer of ABC along with the rest of the band!

Could it be a competition of some sort like Fame academy or the infamous Reborn in the USA, where the audience vote to oust someone from the tour bus after every performance?

Tony Hadley

If it happens to be a question of recognition or popularity, then Tony Hadley would win hands down. Who doesn't know what Tony Hadley looks like, or name his biggest hits? True, Gold, and Through the Barricades are all classics that everyone will recognise and love to hear. The fact that they have held permanent places in his live set for years means that their performance will be particularly solid.

But what of Martin Fry and ABC? Are they as easily recognisable? The name might not ring a bell, but their music will definitely speak for itself. The band had hits like Look of Love, Poison Arrow, and When Smokey Sings and these will always be crowd pleasers.

But have Martin and Co been on the road performing these hits for the last years 15 like Tony? The fact that Martin Fry is an unrecognised name to anyone but fans may prove this the case. Let's hope they have had a lot of practice by the time the tour gets to DeMontfort Hall. Will it be a long walk home for Mr Fry?

See the two eighties crooners live at De Montfort Hall in Leicester on Thursday, 28 April.  The show starts at 7.30pm, tickets are £22.50, £20.50, £18.50.
