Kinky Boots

By Karen Pirie
Transvestites, dominatrixes, drag queens ... and ladies who want something a bit different are among the customers of a Leicester footwear company which is making strides across the globe.

Thigh high PVC boots, pink flatties for adults who wish they were A LOT younger and shoes with spikes that come with a health warning - you can get the lot at a Leicester company specialising in more unusual footwear.

While much of Leicester's once-thriving shoe industry has been usurped by cheap imports, the city-based manufacturers of this wipe-clean fetish-wear are doing a roaring trade.

Not surprisingly, most of their trade is via mail-order but customers come from every corner of the globe. Hay Way has been making "kinky boots" for 30 years and is still a family concern. Brother Philip and Peter and their wives Debbie and Jackie, all work at outlet on Corporation Road.

Tim gets in touch with his feminine side

Debbie says the factory is a panto dame's dream: "We are busier at Christmas because of all the shows. We've just done something for a London show called Erotica. We do up to size 14 and all the shoes and boots are hand-made."

"We sell to all over the planet - goths, transvestites, fetishists and ladies who want something different to for the bedroom. "
Philip Hayes

Philip said: "We sell to all over the planet - goths, transvestites, fetishists and ladies who want something different to for the bedroom. A lot of our customers are closet dressers.

"We've just done something for a theatre production in Nottingham - size 13 in silver, that was one ugly dame!"

BBC Leicester's Tim Parker tried on some of the boots for size. Follow his adventures in our picture gallery, above right.

Have Your Say
Would you be seen dead in footwear like this or does it really float your boat?

Joe
I love pointy toes, and stiletto heels. They look good on women, and feel nice to wear too. I've worn spiky heels to Rocky Horror last year... it was really fun.

Clair
they look really cool, but i wouldnt been seen in these anyday!

jared
i like those boots that have the laces and there kinky like this effin page

gemma
well it actually foat my boat i don't mind getting those boots

GayJ
I wouldn't wear them but anyone who does is incredibly cool.

Hannah
I think they look great, but you have to find the right shoe thats suits you as a shoe is the only item of clothing which takes on the shape of the person wearing it. Anyone should wear what they want when they want and not have a care about what other people think because if people have something harsh to say it is more than likely that they are jealous, but what is there to be jealous about everyone has their own life to lead and has more advantages and disadvantages than other people, that's the way the world works isn't it?
