Babble Sound System's night at Havana in Leicester challenges the usual high price, big budget set-up with its mix of personal policy.

Babble has been putting on nights in the city for the past 10 years and hopes Havana can be its permanent home for its brand of deep house.

Friday 12 December sees house legend Charles Webster gracing the decks and the organisers reveal they took a direct approach to book him.

"I emailed him and asked him if he wanted to come and play and he agreed to it which was good," says promoter Debs.

Debs says the night, now at its new monthly home at Havana, exists to offer something else to frustrated fans of house in Leicester.

"The majority of people who come to our nights do come purely for the music because we are not a commercial dance night.

"People do not have to get dressed up and they can feel safe and comfortable knowing full well that the only people who get let in are nice people.

"We don't have any trouble at our nights. We have never had a fight in all the years we have been going. It's a nice chilled out night," adds Debs.

The night hopes Havana, with its small but intimate 300 capacity, will help build the night's profile and act as a monthly home for Babble.

"It's a purpose built dance music club. It's got a 10K sound system which is more than ample for the size of room. We are just hoping things go well and we can stay on," says Debs.

Babble and nights such as Hiphoperation and MWD40 have proved that anyone can be a DJ if dissatisfied with what is on offer.

Debs believes those wanting to put on DIY music nights can achieve a loyal following if they have the courage to take the DJ plunge.

"I think nowadays anybody can be a DJ. The problem is that there is no outlet for any opportunities for people to go out there and play the records they buy," says Debs.
