Rutland's history headlines

1030 Oakham Church
EDWARD AND EDITH
Edward the Confessor bequeaths Rutland to his wife Edith.
Rutland formed the extreme western area of Edith's lands, hence the name of the village Edith Weston.
1190 Rutland arms
THE CASTLE IS CREATED
Walkelin de Ferrers builds a castle at Oakham.
The name de Ferrers (or `farrier') probably started the custom of requiring visiting noblemen to present horsehoes to the castle.
1548 Uppingham School
SCHOOL DAYS
Uppingham School is founded.
Archdeacon Johnson establishes Uppingham School in a building next to the Parish church.
1740 Fox hunt
COTTESMORE HUNT CREATED
The original hounds were bought by Sir William Lowther.
The Cottesmore is one of the famous hunts of Leicestershire and Rutland, which include the Fernie and the Quorn.
1970 Rutland Water
WATER WORKS
Parliamentary approval for the creation of Rutland Water is given.
Despite opposition from local farmers, the go-ahead is given to flood the River Gwash valley. Today it is a thriving nature reserve.
1974 Rutland Signpost

RUTLAND
ABOLISHED!
Rutland becomes a district of Leicestershire.

Rutland ceases to be England's smallest county, and is merged into Leicestershire, though the county's road signs remain.
1975 Eric Idle

PYTHON PUTS RUTLAND ON TV
Rutland hits the big time with Monty Python.

Python Eric Idle creates the fictitious Rutland Weekend Television for BBC2. featuring spoof rock group, the Rutles
1995 Oakham in sunshine

ON LINE
Oakham School becomes the first British public school on line.

Oakham School, formerly an Elizabethan Grammar school, is based in buildings in the heart of the county town.
1997 Rutland Water

RUTLAND RULES!
After a long campaign, Rutland regains county status.

The county of Rutland, and the city of Leicester gain unitary status. Oakham is again Rutland's county town.
