The Victorian buildings near to the Holiday Inn roundabout and Guild Hall Lane in Leicester have been demolished revealing some hidden gems.

Archaeologists from Leicester University are busy excavating to find out all they can about the site before the building work starts in earnest.

Main finds include dwellings and drains which will be sketched and recorded.

The wall boundaries, drains and building outlines will be preserved for posterity by careful planning and building and you can keep up-to-date on the latest here.

Work on the site will not start until the archaeology is complete and all historical information and artefacts are accounted for.

The new BBC building will preserve the medieval history of Leicester by allowing visitors to view the remains through a glass floor which will welcome them as they enter the building.

The design will provide a glass walkway between two halves of the building which will allow a view from the street entrance through to Leicester Cathedral.

BBC Leicester will keep you informed of the changing face of the new building through reports and a picture gallery.
