The
Libertines gig set off at 10.30pm following their support band The
Bandits. They came out on stage as usual smoking, with their backs
facing the audience. Then, in a Jimi Hendrix style, frontman Carl
positioned his cigarette under the strings on the neck of his guitar.
The
one-hour set consisted of ear-splitting, meaty and melodically belligerent
songs, most of them though had a recurring sound, which could have
been too dreary and tedious for some.
The
music was a blend of indie-rock and punk with influences of similar
bands The Vines and The Strokes.
The
gig was surprisingly impressive, despite the current rumours that
the band could be on the verge of a split after several of their
live gigs where they were either too stoned or drunk to play.
More
recently vocalist and guitarist Carl Barat refused to work with
fellow band mate Pete Doherty in his 'current condition'. The band
had to hire a guitarist for their latest European tour when Pete
failed to attend the shows.
The
Libertines gave off a confident, electric mood, which got the packed
out crowd swaying their heads and bouncing, before leaving them
craving for more. Then ten minutes later they re-emerged to finish
the job.
This
was definitely one of the finest gigs they have performed in recent
months, and with the other UK shows planned, the band can be assured
there is still a large Libertines fan base out there.
