Making the phones ring

Ruth Whiteley auctions another lot

BBC Radio Leeds on-air auction in aid of the Pound for a Pup Appeal set the phones ringing throughout the day.

Thanks to the generosity of listeners thousands of pounds will be added to the appeal.

FACTS

It costs around £35,000 to breed, train and support each guide dog.

There are currently almost 5000 guide dog partnerships in the UK.

The working life of a guide dog is about 7 years. The first four guide dog units in Britain were trained in October 1931.

The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association was founded in 1934 In 1965 Blue Peter followed guide dog Honey through her training.

The auction raised over £15,500 in pledges (around half a guide dog puppy). A total of over £8,500 was raised by mid-afternoon for guide dogs in West Yorkshire.

There was a diverse range of lots from a designer piece of headwear by Elizabeth Parker (sold for £90) to a Bradford Bulls shirt signed by Gareth Gates (Sold for £60).

Star lots - running throughout the whole auction include a box at Leeds Utd (£710 offered) a Spanish Holiday (£900 offered), and the most collectable a box of table tennis balls signed by Leeds' Damien Hirst (£2,550).

The auction kicked off at 8 am and continues throughout the day until 6pm.
