Unity Day melts hearts
Chilling out on Woodhouse Moor
Chilling out on Woodhouse Moor
The sun shone on the Hyde Park Unity Day 2003 as Woodhouse Moor came alive to sound systems, bands and even bingo calling in the Lyceum ballroom tent.

We were there to capture the vibes...

FACTS

Hyde Park Unity Day was initiated by the Hyde Park Residents Association with the mission to :

* create a relaxed friendly and safe environment.
* unite the community and provide an opportunity to highlight the positive aspects of living, working, and studying in Hyde Park.
* demonstrate communities strength through voluntary involvement.
* celebrate cultural diversity through art , music and performance.
* create a focus point for community activities.
* unite and provide opportunities to showcase skills, talent and nature of local people and artists.

Hyde Park Unity day 2003 has been a full year in the planning and fundraising. There have been bucket runs down Otley Road pubs, gig nights , car boot sales and a sponsored walk.

This year there will be a CD compilation of bands and DJs playing on the day.

Spread over Woodhouse Moor is 21 activity areas and the babble of 60 bands, DJs and sound systems. All events and entertainment are free

Whatever your interests Unity Day is bound to have something to entertain you.

In the skate park the boarders are busy with trying to win the competition and still look cool. Alongside the area a graffiti art skills jam is being prepared.

A bouncy castle and children's sports area is alive with activity and a five-side-football tounament has all the teams tearing around despite the ever-rising temperature.

The crowds were taking it easier around the sound systems and in form of the main stage.

Chilling to Carl Stage choosing the tunes for Darkside sound system was Phil, a third year Geology student at the University of Leeds.

"I'm just taking it easy here, because I like reggae music and it's too hot to do much else."

And that easy mood is reflected across the park

In front of the main stage hundreds of sunbathing music fans welcomed Leeds band Urban Eyez kick-starting the afternoon.

Societies as diverse as the the Traditional Taekwondo Association, Cuba Solidarity Campaign and Active 4 Life, a community-based healthy living campaign, publicised their activities.

You would have to have a hard heart not to be impressed by the range and sheer vitality of talent on view.

Leeds together in unity.
