If you have ever walked down past the art gallery on a sunny day you have no doubt noticed small gatherings of people in the main square. People huddling around large chess boards with novelty-sized pieces.

Chess is not famous for being a spectator sport but the outdoor game seems to draw a crowd.
It could be the attraction that players are from all walks of life. Some are experienced chess players who compete for local teams. When the season ends in time for the good weather they find a retreat in the friendly outdoor game. Other players might be on their lunch break from work, taking a breather from their shopping or just playing for fun.

Man playing chess
A relaxed summer pastime in Leeds

The grids are set in the concrete and people have been congregating there for at least the last ten years. Leeds City Council own the pieces and loan them out daily. It is reassuring to think that our fair city shares a pastime with the likes of New York City, who also have communal chess boards- but ours could well be bigger!

If you would like to play on the outdoor boards it couldn't be easier. Just go along and ask for a game, there is an orderly queuing system on the benches and a mutual respect among players.

More proficient players may also be interested in joining the Leeds chess team, if so contact Bernard Hare 0113 2407356.
