I really
enjoyed reading this book. It was a slight departure from my usual
reading material, as I am an avid Patricia Cornwell/Kathy Reichs
fan, but it was fun to read something where you weren't wondering
how many body parts would be found in the first chapter!
| Samaritan:
The plot |
|
Ray
Mitchell is lying in a hospital bed, drifting in and out of
conciousness, his head a bloody mess of swabs and bandages.
He knows who did it, but he's not saying...

The
main thing about this book is that the plot reveals itself in layers,
and draws you into the story in the same way. At first, it seems
just like a gentle read, but after a while, you find yourself wanting
to get a spare half hour to read some more.
The
characters in Samaritan are eminently believable, even to me, who
has never been to America and seen the sort of areas that the lead
character Ray describes as his childhood home throughout the book.
The
language makes you feel that you grew up alongside him, experiencing
the things he has experienced, at the same time.
This
is a strange book, in that you identify a little with all the central
characters, from Ray, who is happy to give anyone money, if only
they say thank you, to Nerese, who has spent her life battling discrimination
in the police force. They all have some aspect of their character
that enables you to feel a kinship with them.
This
book is an excellent read, and I can highly recommend it to others
who enjoy a crime novel. The twist in the tail is a huge surprise
and well worth the wait. Take time to enjoy this book and relish
the language and text of the book. Price uses words to their best
effect, and they should be enjoyed at your leisure, not rushed,
and hurried.
