More Than Enough - John Fulton's debut novel - is set in modern mid-America, and is a detailed account of what happens when family life is disrupted.

When the narrator - fifteen-year old Steven Parker - is attacked by a gang of boys, the Parkers have a chance to move away from sleepy suburbia to Salt Lake City due to the ensuing settlement money. From then on, nothing is the same.

The most honest of novels, More Than Enough operates on different levels. While the reader can share empathy with Steven's younger sister Jenny, little compassion can be granted for Steven's mother as she embarks on an affair with a man totally dissimilar to Steven's father.

For Steven himself, it proves too difficult to remain sane. We see him trying to keep his family together as all around him his parents drift further away.

If anything, More Than Enough suffers slightly from being too earnest, and there are few laughs. Nevertheless, the prose is concise and descriptive, and Fulton brings real lucidity to his characters.

If you are after an emotional drama from a very promising novelist, More Than Enough delivers.
