FACTS

The father of English printing was William Caxton. In 1474, he produced the first ever printed book in English, his own translation of the History of Troy.

The paperback as we know it in the UK was introduced in the 1930s.

Between 1990 and 1995 there was a 22 per cent increase in global book sales in value terms.

Big Read logoA two-week nomination period during April has produced a list Britain's Top 100 best-loved books.

This list has now been published. Check the BBC Big Read website, www.bbc.co.uk/bigread, to see if your nomination made the list.

The list contains books from authors as diverse as Charles Dicken and Jeffry Archer.

A large number of children's books were also nominated, including all four Harry Potter books as well as more classic tales. Leeds' own Arthur Ransome receives a nomination for his book Swallows and Amazons.

Many of the favourite books have also been made into films or TV dramas, such as the epic Gone With the Wind or Brideshead Revisited.

In the autumn, a special feature length TV programme will reveal the Top 10 for the first time. Ten passionate advocates will argue the case for each book in a series of documentaries.

Did your favourite book make the shortlist? Which book in the top 100 do you think will win? We'd like to know what Leeds' favourite book is, so join the discussion on our messageboard.
