Register it or lose it

Almost 100,000 people in Leeds have not yet confirmed their electoral registration details and risk losing the chance to vote in upcoming elections.

Forms were delivered to homes during August and residents were asked to complete them to ensure that the correct details are published on the 2010 register of electors. People who have not registered will not be able to vote. The new register will be be used for the general election that will be held no later than June 2010.

If electoral details are not confirmed by Wednesday 21 October, properties will be visited by canvassers to collect the details.

Alex Meek, Electoral Services Manager for the council, says: “We are working hard to update our electoral register and ensure that every resident, who is eligible to vote, can have their say on polling day, but we are unable to do so if residents do not respond to their canvassing forms.

If you have not yet replied there are a number of ways to respond to the form. Providing that details are unchanged, you can use text messaging, a free phone number or go online to confirm your details.

Text a message to 07797 898767, call 08000 251067
or visit www.elecreg.co.uk/leeds.

Amendments to your details must be made by returning the official form in the post.

Students in the city are reminded that they can register at both their home and term-time address and are legally required to provide the information, even if they are simply responding to say they do not wish to be registered at their term-time address.
