The sound of music

On Saturday 12 September 2009 Leeds will resound to a day of live piano music in the Clothworkers' Hall.

Leeds will be hosting the Pianothon at the beautiful Clothworkers' Hall, part of the University of Leeds, with performances from 50 selected pianists.

Pianothon

One of the featured players will be Robin Wade, 38, who lives in Roundhay. He's going to be playing some Rachmaninov. Robin told the BBC Leeds website.

"I am a little nervous but I love the idea of the Pianothon, especially it featuring people who wouldn't normally get heard.

"I will be playing around midday but the event starts at 9am and I am looking forward to hearing all the other people play.

"I am used to practising at home but not playing to an audience on the piano. I studied at Leeds College of Music, and have played the guitar in live bands. I have learnt the piano piece by heart because I am not a great sight reader but it is a different kettle of fish playing in front of an audience.

"I am trying not to build up the event too much, I'm just happy to try my best."

Sarah Walker

Pianothon will be hosted by Sarah Walker

Hosted by Radio 3's Sarah Walker, the Pianothon is a non-competitive celebration of piano-playing. You can be part of the audience for free.

Amateur pianists, of all ages and abilities, take part in the Pianothon by playing solo or as part of a duo. Any piece of music can be played up to ten minutes duration.

All performances are recorded and put on the Pianothon website - and some will even be broadcast on Radio 3, at a later date.

The event coincides with the final of the Leeds International Pianoforte competition.
