a nice day out

I Love West Leeds 2009

The groundbreaking festival returns with a wide variety of activities and attractions.

Surprising dance moves with supermarket trolleys; underwater soundscapes at Bramley Baths; roller disco, book swaps and tea dances in Armley; a new music group for the over 60s; the world premiere of Dust - a play about the Armley asbestos factory; dark comedy from local writers Boff Whalley and Dom Grace and even a 'bike-in' movie - all this and more awaits visitors to this year's I Love West Leeds Festival which runs from Friday 3 to Sunday 19 July.

The big festival day is Saturday 4 July 2009 in Hainsworth Park, Farsley. This year the Festival is working with Farsley Youth Development Project to make the day even bigger and better than ever with sheds and teepees packed with activities and performances - not to mention a bunch of pesky mountain gorillas and some rather unusual 'vegetable' nannies!

There'll also be live music, old-fashioned fete games, free workshops, banana splits, a pamper zone, 5-a-side football, arts and crafts, the Old Smoothie bar, wacky walkabouts and the return of Farsley's famous beach resort – this time with a full-sized boat!

Also running from the start of the festival is a new exhibition by Leeds-based photographer, Casey Orr. Displayed as large canvases on the exterior wall of HMP Leeds and simultaneously exhibited inside the prison, these photographs explore the nature of migration, community and home. 'Coming Home' runs from Thursday 2 July to Monday 31 August 2009 at HM Prison Leeds, Gloucester Terrace, Stanningley Road Armley.

The festival is also playing host to a world premiere! In association with the West Yorkshire Playhouse, 'Dust' by Kenneth F Yates, tells the story of the Armley Asbestos Factory, and June Hancock, who fought for justice for victims of asbestos. This world premiere will be performed in an empty factory unit close to the site of the original JW Roberts factory.

Featuring a community cast from across Leeds, the production tells the incredible story of June Hancock and her battle for justice using the actual words of those involved taken from interviews and trial transcripts. This play is on in Armley for a single night before transferring to the West Yorkshire Playhouse for further performances between 15-18 July 2009.

I Love West Leeds 2009 runs from Thursday 2 July until Sunday 19 July 2009. Full details of all the events and activities can be found on the website:
