Heritage Open Days 2008

Some of the city’s buildings and places, normally closed to the public, offer free admission and guided tours from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 September 2008 to celebrate Heritage Open Days.

Many of the city’s beautiful country houses, brooding industrial mills and fascinating galleries will be open.

The Still Room

Inside Temple Newsam House

Temple Newsam House, Lotherton Hall, Middleton Railway will all be part of the weekend as will Leeds Town Hall, the Carriageworks Theatre and even Rothwell Sports Centre.

In all over 70 events are planned in the Leeds area.

Guided tours include the Iron Age hill fort at Barwick in Elmet. The 90-minute tour will climb the ramparts of the ancient site hidden within the old village. Head for Hall Tower Field (about 100m west of the village maypole).

Visitors can also take advantage of access to the Brotherton Library at Leeds University, finished in 1936 the library has a spectacular circular reading room.

You can also get some fresh air over the weekend with a heritage walk around the listed buildings in Little Woodhouse (this tour needs pre-booking: 0113 245 9030).

You can also learn more about the personalities of Leeds during a walk, on Thursday 11 September, telling the real stories of the people behind the names celebrated on the city's blue plaques.

And there will even be a rare chance to get arrested and fingerprinted while touring the old cells of Otley Courthouse.

Heritage Open Days are promoted by Leeds Civic Trust in association with Leeds City Council and organised nationally by English Heritage.
