Leeds University Union's Student Executive Officers are involved in running one of the biggest events of the year to date – the International Cultural Festival. It's a festival promoting the diversity of students and gives student activity groups and members a chance to honour their own cultures within Leeds University Union. It's the first year of the celebrations within the Union and organisers hope it will become an annual event in years to come. The festival is a series of events by student activity groups that will not only involve international students personally, but home students too, allowing everyone to experience the different cultures of all members at Leeds University Union. Over the course of the week there will be film showings, ranging from the Brit-Asian comedy "East Is East" to the stylistic Japanese film "Kikujiro". Students will also have the chance to partake in cultural party nights such as Carnaval! - at the Faversham, try their hand at a bit of flamenco in salsa dancing classes, or even listen to a Chinese singing competition. All the societies will be hosting their own national days, guaranteed to be colourful splash of culture all over the Union building. The Union's shops and bars will be providing special food and drink offers. There will also be events taking place in the University of Leeds' International Students Office and Chaplaincy. Andrew Greer, Leeds University Union'’s Activities Officer says "We really wanted to capture all of these events on campus and create a buzz around international culture." The week culminates in a show being performed in the recently refurbished Riley Smith Hall in the Union building, including performances from all the societies involved, displaying their singing, acting and dancing talents. All are welcome - tickets £5. Full timetable of events: last updated: 01/02/2008 at 18:43 You are in: Leeds > Students > Features > International Cultural Festival 2008 |
