Closing in on the finish line

Diarist Sam Pritchard's completion date for his degree course is 2008.....ooh, hang on - that means the summer. What's next?

About Sam

I was born in Surrey, grew up in Berkshire and was a boarder at Monmouth. I currently live in West Sussex and study Geography at the University of Leeds.

I'm rather partial to coffee, flying, music, performing arts, photography, politics, theatre, travelling and wine.

The year on my student card below the words 'completion date' that always seemed so far away, is now here. 2008 has arrived. Not only that, but 2008 already seems to be making somewhat speedy progress.

Following a great weekend in the Yorkshire Dales, the term for me started in force last Monday morning – lectures have begun again, the dissertation deadline is even closer and the workload continues to increase.

Assuming I hand in my dissertation on time and I pass my exams, I will graduate this summer. I've got a family holiday and a summer job to keep myself busy until around the end of September, but then the busy life stops. This begs the question - what do I do come the autumn?

I would continue at university, but I think I've done my fair share of studying for now. Maybe I should take a gap year. Lots of friends of mine have taken gap years in between school and university, and some even during university, but I've never taken one. The world is my oyster, you might say.

Or perhaps it is time for me to enter the real world?

The thing is I haven’t really decided what I want to do with my life. Geography (aka colouring in) is a marvellous subject and I really enjoy it, but whenever I tell people what subject I do, they say "So are you going to become a Geography teacher then?" - whilst straining their brain to work out what else you can do with a Geography degree.

I happen to think that Geography is a very worthwhile subject that is extremely helpful for all sorts of things! But I still haven’t chosen a career.

Any suggestions?
