I chose Leeds so that I could be close to the large Ethiopian community that resides here. Initially I believed that life in Leeds would be very easy, but this has not been so. There are many challenges that face foreigners living in Leeds many of them cultural.

Things we take for granted back home are often radically different over here. Differences such as the food, weather, language and culture can be very challenging for new arrivals. I love Leeds I love it here in Leeds. I have found the people here to be very friendly and helpful, especially when I am faced with a new challenge; such as showing me the way when I get lost – which is quite often! I have also had to get used to the weather here as it is very different to Ethiopia.

In my short time living here I have experienced many different kinds of weather including: snow, wind, heavy rain and very hot sunshine. Back in Ethiopia I had never experienced snow for example. Life can be lonely Life here can be very lonely without my family so I telephone them every week just to hear their voices. It costs a lot of money but it is worth it. One day I hope that my family will come and join me in Leeds so we can live happily as a family once again. |
