No two stage productions are exactly the same. In the case of The Rocky Horror Show it is even more pronounced as there is so much involvement from the audience that the ad libs from the performers become an integral part of the production. In this current production, starring David Bedella as Frank N Furter and Billy Pearce as The Narrator, these two individuals are so good with their one-liners that the audiences are kept in fits of laughter throughout. In 1973, Richard O’Brien came up with the idea of The Rocky Horror Show and it became an overnight sensation, playing to packed houses in both London and New York. It was made into a cult film shortly afterwards and 34 years later is still wowing audiences. As you approach the theatre, basques, suspenders and fishnet stockings abound – and that is only the guys. The girls are dressed likewise this is pantomime for adults, where everyone has a great time. The show features all the timeless musical classics including Sweet Transvestite, Damn It Janet and, of course, the pelvic-thrusting Time Warp, during this latter number the audience are on their feet, and joining in the movements with the cast on stage. This current production, is still the biggest and baddest rock 'n' roll musical and stars David Bedella as the outrageous transvestite Frank N Furter. David is absolutely brilliant in the part, and has an outstanding vocal range. He is joined on stage by Billy Pearce , who is plays the character you love to hate - The Narrator. Billy Pearce is well known from his various performances in pantomime and is a local Leeds man and has a brilliant rapport with the audience. I thought he seemed a little nervous at the start of the show but, once he started ad-libbing with the audience, he soon found his niche and put in a polished performance. Richard Meek and Sarah Boulton play the parts of Brad and Janet, the couple whose car breaks down and who seek shelter in the castle of Frank N Furter. I saw Richard last year playing the role of Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and whilst this production is a total departure from the more genteel Joseph, Richard’s excellent vocals ensured that he played the part extremely well. Sarah carried off this part with aplomb. The supporting artists all provided great support to what was a brilliant evening’s entertainment. This show is becoming more popular than ever, with more and more of the audience entering into the spirit of things and dressing up for the performances. This is a brilliant show, and well worth seeing during its current run. The Rocky Horror Show is at the Grand in Leeds until Saturday 24 March 2007. |
