Free hugs in Briggate
Hugs from Rosa, Maria and Kerry

Hugs for happiness?

Three school students are giving up part of their half-term holiday to spread happiness in Leeds.

Have you had enough hugs recently? Three 16-year-old students, Maria, Rosa and Kerry, have been spreading a little direct happiness in Leeds city centre this week, they're on a self-imposed three-woman campaign to put more love onto the streets.

The three women, bearing bright yellow signs saying 'Free hugs' and carrying flowers, have been hugging complete strangers bustling along Briggate in the centre of Leeds.

The idea is to "Spread happiness through Leeds, because everybody need happiness."

The bizarre stunt came about when the threesome heard of a similar hug-giver at work in Australia and thought that Leeds needed more happiness.

Hundreds of people have already been the recipient of hugs during this half-term break which is, the huggers declare, "The best way to spend a holiday."

Our reporter Layla Painter went along to have a hug and see if it really could banish glumness.
