| About Sam | I was born in Surrey, grew up in Berkshire and was a boarder at Monmouth. I currently divide my time between homes in Sussex and Pembrokeshire and University in Leeds, where I’m in my second year studying Geography. I’m rather partial to coffee, flying, music, performing arts, photography, politics, theatre, travelling and wine. |
I’m halfway to having BA after my name. In just eighteen months, I will be part of the big wide world. That is, of course, subject to me passing my exams, but there we are. We're already being prompted to start thinking of career options, as the time for applying for jobs gets closer. Personally, I have absolutely no idea what I want to do after university. But I'm not letting that worry me just yet; I'm going to continue to enjoy student life in Leeds while it lasts. It has been a while since I updated this diary. So what have I been getting up to recently?: In November, nine friends and I made the most of cheap airfares from Leeds and went to Dublin for a daytrip. We mooched around Dublin city for most of the day, taking in sights such as Dublin Castle, St Patrick's Cathedral, St Stephen's Green, O'Connell Street, Temple Bar, and a traditional Irish pub, where we sampled the local Guinness and Baileys (both of which are much smoother in Dublin!). I went home to Sussex over the Christmas vacation, which seemed to pass too quickly. It was great to catch up with friends and relations though. I even managed to fit in a minibreak to Spain with an old friend just before Christmas. In January, I had four exams (which didn’t go too badly) and I've spent most of my time since, househunting. I'm pleased to say we have found a house, and have set a date to sign the contracts. The househunting season in Leeds seemed to be earlier this year, but people were still keen to sign as soon as possible. We've been told there is a housing surplus in Hyde Park and Headingley (the two main student areas) but there were very few decent houses left by the time we finished looking. Semester Two has recently begun in force. Well, I say with force, but I actually mean quite gently. I don’t have all that many lectures this term and I’ve only been set one essay so far. Easy life! I'd better not speak too soon; no doubt I'll be underneath a mountain of essays before long. The other weekend, I went to a ball in York Minster with a few friends. It is a truly epic setting for a ball; a great time was had by all. This weekend, I have another ball – the Leeds University Music Society annual ball, which is being held in the Marriott Hotel in the city centre. I’ve got a lot more to look forward to this year. In March I'm going to Finland for a week, as part of my course and, in April, I'm going to Switzerland with some school friends. Watch out for the reports - Ciao for now. |
