The sky over Kirkstall Road
The sky over Kirkstall Road

What is this?

This 'large ball of fire' was filmed from a car on Kirkstall Road this morning. What is it?

Austin Greenwood got in touch with BBC Leeds to say:

"I was in a cab this morning at about 9:30am heading down Kirkstall Road (into the city centre) with seven others, when I saw what I'd describe as a large ball of fire in the sky. It seemed to be falling. It had a plume of smoke behind it going right across the sky. Possibly a comet or a something."

"I do have a video of it on my mobile phone."

BBC Radio Leeds' Bob Walmsley read out Austin's original email and described the video clip on air. Bob also heard from Ken Willoughby, chairman of the West Yorkshire Astronomical Society.

Ken had the handicap of not being able to view the footage but speculated that it might be a 'slow moving meteor'.

Sacha Christie sent another email to BBC Leeds saying:

"I write for UFO Data magazine. I was standing on Water Lane in the city centre when I noticed a bright light in the sky.

"I observed the anomaly and took a photograph of it on my camera phone.  I can tell you now that the image has generated a lot of interest.  It has been sent to NASA and will be used as their image of the day and we have been in touch with someone at RAF Fylingdales tracking centre.

Our conclusion at the UFO Data forum is that it is a piece of space debris burning up in the atmosphere which is not necessarily unusual but it certainly isn't common over Leeds. I can honestly say I was in the right place at the right time... for probably the first time in years."

So what do you think the feature is?

Holy Moly - ya seem to got ya'self one of them there flying hover boats from Mars.

Sacha Christie.
The likeliest explanation is that it is some space junk burning up in the atmosphere. It happens everyday but just not over Leeds! Hundreds of sattelites for telecommunications and government projects are launched into space every year, once the sattelite is launched the rest of the craft disintigrates and the bits fall back towards earth. The smaller bits burn up on re entry but the bigger bits fall back to earth... usually into the sea because it covers the majority of the planet. The likelihood of it being an alien craft is almost nil. Around 98% of strange Aerial phenomena are identifiable.. the other 2% are not. It is essentially a UFO because it still remains unidentified :)

Awww, I missed my spacebus again! Stuck here for another 12,000 years. *sigh* :)

Andy Smith
Given that China recently performed a test of a satellite-destroying missile, is it possible that this was a piece of the destroyed satellite burning up in the atmosphere. Either that or some other space debris.

Dave Wynne
Was Austin's cab taking him to rehab or from it...lol

I thought this was a send-up till I saw the Leeds United dice dangling from the window and then I realised it was Wisey trying to convince the Leeds fans that Aliens were abducting his squad and leaving impersonators of footballers in their place.

I live in kirkstall,im really exicted about this sighting...to me ufo's must exsist, for a world like ours to be around, why cant another world be formed somewhere in this vast galaxy....

Rolf Neugebauer
I remember seeing something exactly like this in the 60s while having a garden bonfire with my dad. I can picture it like it was yesterday. It crossed the sky left to right and quite low. Our first thought was that it was a plane on fire but the lack of evidence on the news suggested space debris or a very large meteorite. Either way it was an amazing sight as it was mid evening and brilliant against the darkening sky.

shripad sathe
a meteorite ( is the spelling correct?) and nothing else. relax....:-)

I saw this too. I would like Mr Green Wood to contact me urgently.

I agree with Russell. Either a meteor or space debris burning up in the atmosphere. Not often seen, but spectacular when witnessed.

It was the rocket that Dennis Wise had just given his players at training.

I saw something similar back in '22, I can remember it like it was yesterday.

Obviously it was a customer who could not pay the increased airport tax on the plane!

Jeff Gbloom
Wow spectacular footage. I wonder what it could be? It doesn't look like a comet.

Nathan Fossey
At last, my parents have come to join me on this strange planet.

Russel Callaghan UFO DATA
Quite a lucky guy to see something like this, it's a shame YTV didn't see it pass over their studios. Many thousands missed it but Austin caught it. Could be a bit of space debris or possible fragment of meteor, don't think it's aliens this time but quite a sight.

Gary
I think it is a falling piece of space junk
