An inspector calls on Morley

The first ever Morley Literature Festival sees guest appearances from Gervaise Phinn and Ian McMillan.

The festival takes place on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 September 2006 at Morley Town Hall and Morley Library and was organised to coincide with Morley Library's centenary celebrations.

On Friday evening Barnsley Poet Ian McMillan, a regular radio and TV broadcaster who will entertain the festival audience with an evening of poetry and reminisces.

Saturday sees Gervase Phinn take the stage. He is well known for his books on life as a schools inspector in the Yorkshire Dales.

Both these evening performances take place at Morley Town Hall, doors open at 6pm, performances start at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £2 and are now available from the Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square.

The festival includes a poetry competition involving local schools, a puppet theatre performance, storytellers and young people producing a living comic over the weekend. Festival-goers can also take part in poetry workshops and a map of Morley art workshop.

For younger readers, local writer Emma Barnes (author of the Jessica Haggerthwaite books) will be at the festival along with children's writer Rebecca Royle.
