So join with me now in a moment of reflection, as I reflect (in nutshell mode) on what has been a truly epic adventure – BBC People: Man – if you live in the ghetto, you would say that BBC people are 'safe'. Safe indeed they are, and I've learnt a lot from the many helpful and wise characters here at BBC Leeds. BBC Football: My goodness me, Monday nights, it's practically the Premiership. BBC Radio Leeds: Although aimed almost exclusively at the elderly and the infirm, BBC Radio Leeds is permanently blasting out across the BBC building and you better believe that all the staff are dancing to Graham Liver in the morning. BBC Canteen: It's called Beebies, which is an automatic bonus – I've enjoyed access to the fine cuisine of the BBC canteen. BBC Press Passes / ID Card / Email Account: Makes life easy – opening a lot of doors. That's meant figuratively but literally also, in the sense that my BBC ID card can actually open doors. BBC Public Service Ethos: Man – respect to the BBC for this, because all of the people I've spoken to here are right behind the idea that the BBC does what it does for the good of the people. They don't take for granted the fact that the organisation is funded by the licence fee payer. It makes for a good working atmosphere because you've got everyone working together to 'Inform, Educate and Entertain'. BBC Weather: We've got a cool weather man here at BBC Leeds called Paul Hudson. BBC In The Studio: I've been lucky enough to be able to learn from grandmasters Alex, Daragh and Johnny about how the radio works. This has probably been the highlight of my time here so far. Johnny has helped me learn about how the equipment in the studio works, which is cool, it's interesting to see what it takes to broadcast a show live. BBC Vox Pops: I had honestly no idea what in the world a vox pop was. I thought it was an ice-lolly or something. In the dictionary it just says that a vox pop is a 'Vox Populi' and that didn't really clear matters up. All it is, essentially, is asking people about something and then recording their response in the hope that they'll produce an interesting story or a witty quip. If they don't give you a good quip then it’s a bit of a disappointment. The magic of the vox pop was introduced to me by vox-meister / producer Alex, we've since gone on to collect some truly epic vox pops. The problem is, when you're collecting vox pops, that everyone seems to have a train to catch. BBC On The Road: Now, I've been on two radio road trips with Daragh. Bradford was the first, when we went to cover the Tour of Britain, a big cycling event, which was good. We got free hats. Then we went somewhere that I had only ever read about in books – Huddersfield. What makes these little road trips good are the conversations that me and Daragh have in the car, it's good to learn about the radio stuff, but we also end up talking about such things as – the Irish, Zidane's head butt and many other such interesting topics. BBC Bristol and Birmingham: Blast have sent us reporters on two trips this summer. The first was a trip to Bristol, where the food was nice – and then last week, to Birmingham, where the food wasn't so nice. Enough reflection for now – so it's goodbye from me. |
